Homework Assignment for February

Well, this lesson ended up shorter than I expected. Im really not expecting you all to know too much detail, but rather the broad ideas. For that reason, the assignment is in two sections. The first part is made up of questions referring directly to the info in the lesson and the introduction. The second part is self-directed learning and concerns the topics Ive discussed, be asks for additional information that you wont find in the lesson.

Please take note that parts of the assignment may also refer to the intro, so you may want to re-read it.

When you answer the questions, it is NOT NECESSARY to use all of the accents on the words and names. If you can get the accents, thats great, but you wont loose marks if you dont use them.

Part One: Answer the following questions from the Introduction and Lesson 1

1. Describe the difference between Ainur, Valar and Maiar.

2. Name a Maiar and a Vala mentioned in the lesson.

3. What was the name of the age when the Elves awoke?

(1 mark)

4. In this age, how was Middle Earth lit?

(1 mark)

5. Who were the Three Kindred and what were their names?

6. Who were the four leaders of the Three Kindred?

(4 mark)

7. Who crafted the Silmarils?

(1 mark)

8. Who are the Sindarin Elves?

(1mark)

9. Where was Tol Eressëa located?

(1 mark)

10. Where did the Valar live before they lived in Valinor, and how was this land lit?

(2 marks)

11. The Waters of Awakening is known by what other name, and on what seas shore was it located?

(2 marks)

Part Two: Using any Internet or other resource that you wish, answer one of the following questions in some detail (but dont go overboard!). None of these questions concern a different time period or event then weve covered; they merely ask for more detail. Remember, you only need to answer one of the following questions.

There were many elves of the Teleri who turned aside from the Great Journey. Briefly describe the Lindar, Sindar, Nandor and Silvan Elves, mentioning some facts such as where they settled, who their leader was, etc. (5 marks)

It is unknown how long the Elves dwelt in darkness in Middle Earth, before answering the summons of the Valar and embarking on the Great Journey. Briefly discuss the Hunter and the Rider, including what may have happened to the Elves unfortunate enough to be taken. (5 marks)

During the Years of the Trees, Middle Earth was a perilous place, as Melkor controlled it. Briefly discuss The Battle of the Powers. What was Melkors fate? Why did the Valar decide to attack Melkor? (5 marks)
